Well, it’s time to talk about the 1 euro houses in 2024 and figure out where they’ve been hiding. Honestly, I have to admit that I know some determined people who eagerly want to buy a house for 1 euro.

You see, as many already know, 1 euro is just the starting price at auction, or you could say it’s a “marketing gimmick,” because 80% of the houses are sold for prices ranging from 1200 to 3500 thousand dollars. Does that surprise you? Don’t be surprised — the 1 euro house program is a kind of show organized within the framework of a small town. TV crews come, journalists write, the press talks about the town, and all of a sudden, it becomes the center of attention.

For example, in early 2024, Amanda Holzhen and Alan Carr (British TV presenters) found themselves in Tuscany to buy a 1 euro house in Fornovolasco (there’s a good article about it), but that’s not the point.

Let’s get back to the folks who want to buy a 1 euro house. You know, we keep an eye on the official results. Yes, indeed, those are the results published after the auction ends and the winners are announced. So, what surprises us… For example, there’s a list of 20 winners because 20 houses were sold. We see houses for 2000 euros, even a house for 5000, and bam… we see a house for 1 euro. Exactly for 1 euro.

Do you think it went to? A very naive person who believed the advertising? Was it just a coincidence? What is this even? It has always puzzled us. What’s going on, we wondered… Maybe it’s corruption. And we decided to find this person and ask a few questions. We decided to ask how they did it. Or rather, how she did it.

So, how did she buy a house for 1 euro in Italy?

The answer was surprising. She said, “I’m just very stubborn. I’m an Olympic champion in stubbornness. I’m a very stubborn woman, and my husband knows it, my neighbors know it, and probably the Olympic committee will soon know it too.”

Hmm… we said, what strange competitions you have! But why do you need this, and most importantly… you didn’t answer the question: How did you do it?

The answer was simple: I just took a calculator and calculated. I calculated my flight, hotel accommodation, trips in search of houses, notary fees, and the simplest repairs, and decided: If I buy a house, then only for 1 Euro. I calculated that it’s not worth more for those who live in the USA or Britain. No, of course, if I lived closer to Italy, I might have spent more… but I don’t live there — that’s why 1 Euro.

And what? we asked. Did it all just work out like that? No, of course, she replied. Nobody wanted to sell me a house for 1 euro. I sent applications for three years and didn’t win. But now, in 2023, I won, and soon I’ll have a house for 1 euro where I’ll be doing repairs. In early 2024, I’ll receive documents from my surveyor with plans and renovation permits. But for now, sorry — goodbye. It was nice to meet you.

And then we understood something. If you can’t plan ahead like this woman did for 7 years… maybe you don’t need a house for 1 euro? After all, you can just go to the sea in Italy and have fun.

It seems to us that there is such a story when a person searches for information for a long time, chooses this 1 euro house, participates in auctions, and learns Italian (because they only know the words “Beautiful pizza,” “One more glass of wine, please,” and one more Italian curse for all occasions).

And then they win this house, get involved in Italian bureaucracy, and say, “Damn! I just wanted to have fun and start a new life! Why should there be repairs in my new life? I’m not a builder, and I don’t carry a sledgehammer with me.”

A strange start to a new life… And the house is strange too — there are probably ghosts living there…
